Livestock Heritage Breeds

livestock heritage breeds

Today large-scale Industrial Agriculture relies on just a handful
of highly specialized livestock breeds to keep their production high and costs low.
This current state of having just a small number of livestock breeds has come at the expense
of the near extinction of a majority of breeds that were in existence
prior to the Industrial Revolution. These near-extinct breeds are called ‘Heritage Breeds’.

Heritage Breeds are traditional livestock breeds that pre-date Industrial Agriculture.
Heritage Breeds have a wide genetic base. They tend to be heartier, are better foragers, and
are well suited to small scale farming.
